It's no secret that last week there was an event in Valencia that we hoped we would never see, and no I am not talking about the America's Cup, that was an event we thought we would never see! The ex mayor of Montroy was arrested and detained overnight for allowing illegal builds in his town during the years of his mandate. The story got some real leverage because of the scale of the issue and those involved. There are roughly 70 villas known to be affected by this particular deal although there may be more.

A report has just been leaked to the Cadena SER radio station that the black economy in Spain now makes up 23.3% of all transactions. This means that a quarter of the economy in Spain doesn't show up on the official figures for the size of the GDP for example. The figure is 5% higher than a decade ago and it is getting higher due to the famous "Crisis".

One of the things that you learn when you have lived in Spain for a time is that things are not what they seem in many cases. This may well be why "Spain is Different" still holds true. What on the surface can seem a totally normal thing has millions of tentacles and subplots underneath. Today's question is what are the banks doing? Now Spanish banks look safe and have not had the huge upheavals of the States or The UK. However there is something going on and I would like to make a few suppositions here as everybody loves a good conspiracy theory.

The market is cranking up for people moving to Spain. Sterling has started rising and this has piqued the interest of those who were waiting to come to Spain. Enquiries are up, visits are up and prices are steadying.

OK I know it is slightly early but I wanted to get this out today for a friend of mine on Twitter who needs a few podcasts for his car this week as he is travelling around.

I went out to Valencia's central market this morning taking the family. Today I felt naked! I didn't have a camera. I have never seen so many 35mm SLR devices in one area in my life. There were at least eight different classes on photography going on and getting out of the way of the long lenses was rather difficult.

The Americas Cup will take place next month in Valencia. The 32nd was a great event that changed the face of the City at least temporarily. This is just a damp squib.
