Today is the last day of relative quiet in Valencia for the next twenty days. The Mascleta´s in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento start tomorrow heralding the start of Fallas (Official dates 15th - 19th of March) but actually starting now. It also heralds the start of spring and after the winter we have had with a perfect storm heading into North Western Spain about time too.
The Fallas fiestas are the most important fiestas on the Valencian calendar of course and they are a cornucopia of noise, excess and art culminating in the burning of the Fallas models on the night of the 19th of March. This year promises to be huge as the dates coincide with all of the schools in the area getting the whole week off so expect a ton of pyromaniac kids running round the city of the three fingered handshake throwing bangers as if their lives depended on it and firing rockets down the street in the general direction of anyone in the way. Fire crews will be run off their feet and not much sleep will be got as the Despertar each morning will wake you up early and the late night firework displays will keep you up as you party. Valencia is the place to be in March so get yourself along here.
Oh and just in case you don't know what a mascletá is
