100 Tips For Buying A Property In Spain: Number 2 - Use a Lawyer

Here is the second video in our series about what you must do if you are thinking about coming to live in Spain. Today's tip is all about lawyers. Tip number 2 in our series of 100 things to think about when you are coming to Spain to live.

Now we have all heard the scare stories about the lawyer with unlimited power of attorney that sold off all of somebody's land an when they came back they had to live in a doghouse as it was the only remaining property they had... Well maybe not. However, I think that it is extremely important that you should use a lawyer for any property purchase for many reasons, not least of which is the avoidance of the blame game. Lawyers should have indemnity insurance in case they make any mistakes on the purchase and then you have someone to sue if something goes wrong. However lawyers will give you a peace of mind when buying property. How do you choose a lawyer? Look for recommendations in your local area, ask people who they know that is good, ask your estate agent, but don't take their word for it. If you hear from various sources that a lawyer is good then believe it. Always choose one who speaks your language too as they can more easily communicate what you need or want to know. Never use a lawyer that represents a developer because they are in league. Never use a lawyer recommended by the promotor of the properties they will usually be a family member. Any more suggestions? Video number 3 will be posted as a link on Twitter and Facebook so make sure you are following us there so that you can see it. It talks about inspection trips. Only 97 more after that.
