This is a post specifically for our UK based readers. If you are from another country you can read it and laugh. If you are from the UK it may just help you to deal with the horror. Anyway…
Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, BREXIT, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, BREXIT, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Bloody Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, Brexit……………….
(See it even made me go all comic sans on you there!)

It’s the constant background noise isn’t it? If you are in the UK you have now had at least three years of it and the last two years have just been the above repeated constantly…, incessantly…, every day…, every hour…, every goddamn minute… You can’t escape it for long. It’s a total nightmare of course. It’s a word that a few years ago didn’t exist and now you wake up in the middle of the night with existential angst screaming the bloody thing. (Just me? OK)
But guess what, you don’t need to stick around. In fact, if you read on you may find now is the time to escape.

Now, of course, I hope that Brexit doesn’t happen. Most people wish it would just go away and never again would they have to hear that word. However, you can prepare yourself now and maybe, just maybe, you can keep your EU citizenship.
How does it work?
The Article 50 agreement says that the UK will leave the EU on the 29th of March 2019. There is then a transition period, currently 21 months before the UK leaves the EU. (Let’s just say this is at the moment “fluid” because crashing out without a deal means no transition)
At the moment British people who buy a property and get their residency before the 29th March 2019 will be considered to be settled in Spain even without the 5 year time period required for permanent residency. People who move here after the 29th March 2019 before the end of the 21 month transition period “may” be considered as settled on the date of the end of the transition period but it is not yet guaranteed and of course the crass stupidity of the UK government and Conservative party may move those particular goalposts.
So, it’s safest to say, get here before the 29th March 2019 with your property bought, your residency done and get yourself registered at your local town hall on the Padrón and you will probably be protected from any future changes in the relationship between the UK and Spain and be allowed to stay for periods of longer than 3 months at a time (Which is probably what will happen to UK citizens as non European Union citizens after Brexit). You would possibly also benefit then from any future changes to Spanish law to allow early Spanish citizenship or even dual nationality to be granted.
Second choice would be to move here and do all of that during the supposed transition period. “No deal” scuppers that of course so the more likely “no deal” looks the more urgent it is for you to get here and get everything sorted out quickly.
Now I realise that I have never written anything with so many words such as “probably”, “possibly”, “at the moment”, “fluid”… etc… This could be out of date ten minutes after I publish it so it’s better to get in touch as soon as possible to start your search. Remember that Brexit means nothing in the Valencia Property Market. Prices here are rising and as the value of the pound plummets then your pound buys less. Post Brexit
In the aftermath of Brexit with the UK as a smouldering ruin devoid of food and medicines with zombie hordes roaming the countryside in the hope of eating the brains of those who said Brexit will be all sunny uplands, the UK will be treated as a third country. This means that if you have over 500k Euros to invest then you will be immediately granted the Spanish Golden Visa. (Non EU nationals are currently treated in this way so expect the same to apply for UK nationals post Brexit) So even if you cannot make the dates above for reasons of family, business or other constraints then it might be worth robbing a bank (Or selling your house but it would probably be better to do that before the crash) to get 500k and then buying property here to get yourself out of the ensuing chaos. We will welcome you here and we have the legal teams ready to get your Golden Visa for you.
